Derek Haines

SUPERINTENDENT WITH OVER 40 YEARS OF POLICING EXPERIENCE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, HONG KONG AND THE WEST INDIES.

Derek Haines received the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) for his leadership and actions during Hurricane Ivan (Cat 5, Cayman Islands, 2004), a culmination of his 40 year policing career encompassing violent crime, counter terrorism and counter narcotic/corruption.

In 2004 Derek took Command of the Royal Cayman Islands Police on the approach of the catastrophic Category 5 Hurricane Ivan and led that body throughout the emergency. He oversaw and directed national and international operations to preserve and save life, maintain public order, prevent looting, quell outbreaks of disorder at the prison and ensure the safety of national key assets.

Derek’s further professionalism and dedication have been acknowledged on three separate occasions by Her Majesty the Queen in Her birthday honours, including being appointed as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), in 2015.

Whilst a serving Chief Superintendent, Derek was charged with drafting the Cayman Islands National Crisis Management plan for the Cayman Islands Government, coordinating multiple government agencies in preparing, training and responding to crisis on the national level.

Derek has coordinated crisis management exercises in Cayman and Anguilla, delivered presentations at the National Hurricane Conference in the USA and lectured at the police training school in Jamaica, Barbados, and the wider Caribbean region.

After retiring from the public sector, Derek was handpicked to head the Health, Safety, Security and Crisis Management department for Dart Enterprises, Cayman, where he oversaw the planning, preparation, training and execution of disaster management and crisis solutions.

At the 2018 US National Hurricane Conference, Derek was asked to join the Caribbean and Tropical Islands Hurricane Committee, tasked with coordinating multi-national training, planning, response and logistics for disaster management and recovery in the region.

Testimonials

Her Excellency Helen Kilpatrick CB, Governor of the Cayman Islands (September 2013 - March 2018)

I got to know Derek in the early stages of my appointment as Governor, through his roles at the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and as President of Cayman Rugby. It soon became apparent what a pillar of the community he is, always aiming to serve and support the island to the best of his ability.

He has been a committed and a hugely beneficial donor to multiple causes through his annual running/climbing for charity. His efforts impressed me so much so much so that I became Patron of his charity appeals for three consecutive years. Most notably, Derek’s fundraising included the 2014 Grand Cayman Hospice appeal that has resulted in the building of a facility valued at over $3million and which will be of huge benefit to the community of the Cayman Islands..

Both personally and professionally, I know Derek to be a man of integrity. His service has been recognised by HM the Queen with honours on three separate occasions.
